What Is the Frenum and Tongue-Tie Release Process?
The procedure at UMG Family Dentistry is quick and performed in our office. During the procedure, the dentist will use a laser or surgical tool to gently cut the frenum. This allows for better movement of the tongue or lips. The tongue-tie procedure is minimally invasive and does not require general anesthesia. Numbing cream or a local anesthetic is typically used to ensure comfort. For tongue-tied babies, the procedure is especially quick with many infants resuming feeding immediately after the release. After the procedure, some patients may need a short healing period. For adults, light soreness can be expected, but it typically subsides within a few days. Babies generally recover much faster. You may be given simple post-care instructions to ensure proper healing. Exercises may also be recommended to strengthen the muscles of the tongue and lips after the procedure.
