What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?
At UMG Family Dentistry, we're committed to giving you a healthy, beautiful smile, even if you have damaged or missing teeth. Our practice offers dental crowns and bridges to help restore the function and appearance of your teeth. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength while improving its appearance. Crowns can be made from several materials, including porcelain, ceramic, or metal, and are designed to look like your natural tooth and blend with your other teeth. A dental bridge is used to replace several missing teeth and restore your full smile. It consists of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap (called abutments) and one or more replacement teeth in between. These replacement teeth, known as pontics, are crafted to match the appearance of your natural tooth and give you the ability to chew, speak, and smile with confidence. Schedule a consultation at UMG Family Dentistry in Columbia, MD to discover how a dental crown or bridge can enhance your smile's health and aesthetics.
How Do Dental Crowns and Bridges Work?
Dental crowns cover the visible portion of a damaged or decayed tooth, preserving the tooth structure and restoring normal function. The dental crown procedure typically requires two visits. In the first visit, the tooth is prepared by removing any damaged tissue and reshaping it to fit the crown. Impressions are then taken and sent to a lab to create your customized crown. During this time, a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth. At the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is placed, resulting in a strong and natural-looking tooth. Dental bridges work similarly but involve using crowns on neighboring teeth (abutments) to support one or more replacement teeth. After preparing the abutment teeth, impressions are taken, and the dental bridge is crafted. The dental bridge is then anchored onto the abutments, filling the gap and restoring function and appearance. Like crowns, dental bridges are customized to fit comfortably in your mouth and blend seamlessly with your natural tooth color.
How Do I Care for My Dental Crowns and Bridges?
Once your custom crown is placed, our team will make any necessary adjustments to ensure it fits comfortably and functions properly. We’ll also review the best ways to care for your restoration, including proper brushing and flossing techniques to keep the area clean and healthy. During your regular visits to UMG Family Dentistry in Columbia, MD, we’ll check on your crown and overall oral health to catch any issues early. With good care, your crown can last for many years. If your crown ever feels loose or comes off completely, contact our office right away — trying to fix it yourself can cause damage to both the crown and your natural tooth.

UMG Family Dentistry Reviews
Dr. Ung is amazing! Explained everything before she did it. Super kind. 10/10 experience. Definitely recommend, especially if you’re anxious about seeing a dentist. - Abiola
Took all three of my kids (7, 9, and 12 years old) to UMG Dental and had a great experience! Dr. Ung was kind, thorough, and took the time to explain everything clearly to each child. The kids felt comfortable, and I really appreciated how well everything was handled from start to finish. Highly recommend!
Trustworthy and attentive dental care by Catherine and Dr. Ung. I'm very glad I switched their team.
Le docteur est tres gentille et accueillante.
Fantastic dentist and practice - Dr. Ung, is very personable and caring. She works with you on and listens to your concerns. My mother is 93 and looked like she needed three teeth pulled and get fitted for dentures. Once the doctor had a better view of her teeth she determined that she could save one with a crown. My mom was thrilled. She didn't have much pain and is recovering well. Waiting for the crown to come back and then mom can get scanned for her dentures. All of the staff are great and it is a very warm and inviting atmosphere at the office. Note, there is also urgent care and physical therapy services at the location.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does getting a bridge hurt?
Our team understands that dental work can cause anxiety for many patients. We strive to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Before the procedure, we apply a numbing agent, and if needed, we can discuss sedation options to help you feel more relaxed during the dental bridge placement.
Are dental bridges removable?
Dental bridges are generally not removable; they are fixed in place by attaching to the surrounding teeth or implants. However, some types, like removable bridges or partial dentures, can be taken out. We will recommend the best option based on your needs and oral health.
How long does it take for a dental tooth cap to settle?
While your new crown might feel bulky right after your procedure, it is common that it settles in as little as two weeks. If you're still experiencing discomfort or irritation after two weeks, contact our team so we can decide what is best for you.
