What Is A Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth and its ligaments from its socket in the bone. At UMG Family Dentistry, we prioritize saving your natural teeth whenever possible, but there are instances when a tooth needs to be extracted to protect your oral health. Our team uses local anesthesia to numb the area, ensuring a comfortable experience for every patient. For added comfort, we offer sedation options, such as nitrous oxide and oral-conscious sedation, to help you feel at ease throughout your tooth extraction. We will provide you with thorough information about how long a tooth extraction takes to heal, how to maintain good oral hygiene, and how many follow-up visits are required for optimal healing. Schedule a consultation at our Columbia, MD practice to learn more about our caring approach and personalized options.
What Should I Expect from A Tooth Extraction?
At UMG Family Dentistry, your tooth extraction experience is designed to be as smooth and gentle as possible. The extraction procedure will begin with numbing the area using local anesthesia. Our team can also offer sedation techniques to help you stay relaxed if you have dental anxiety. For a simple extraction, the dentist will gently loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator and carefully remove it. In the case of a surgical extraction, a small incision is made in the gums to access the tooth. The tooth may be broken into smaller pieces to make removal easier, especially in cases involving wisdom teeth. After the tooth is removed, the dentist will clean the area and, if necessary, stitch the gum tissue to aid healing. We also offer dental ozone therapy, a holistic method that is known for its antimicrobial properties, reducing the risk of infection and speeding up recovery. For those experiencing a dental emergency, we provide emergency same-day tooth extractions to address pain and infection quickly. After your extraction, you will receive aftercare instructions, such as things to avoid and what to eat. It's essential to follow these instructions to ensure proper healing and avoid complications.

Tooth Extractions Reviews
Dr. Ung is an amazing dentist! She is very passionate about her work and also very professional. I’ve been going to her for all my dental needs for years. She has performed cleanings for me and also wisdom tooth extraction. She helped me save a lot of money on dental work by making recommendations on things I did and didn’t need. All procedures went smoothly. Highly recommend!
Truly amazing! After ageing out from my pediatric dentistry, I took some time to search for a new dentist. I found UMG Family Dentistry under the list of dentists that take my insurance, and I was very impressed with their high review rating compared to other dentistry's on the list.Scheduling an appointment was seamless and easy, and when I came in for my appointment (the building is beautiful by the way) I was greeted by Dr. Ung herself!I came in for a look at my wisdom teeth, and after taking an x-ray, Dr. Ung gave me a detailed explanation of what was going on and what she recommended for next steps. I really appreciated how thoughtfully she answered my questions as well, and it helped me to trust her expertise and skills in dentistry. So, based on my experience so far, this is a dentistry to trust!
This practice is a God sent. I woke up this morning in excruciating pain I just wanted to get it resolved I already knew it had to do something with my wisdom tooth. I just wanted to know what was going on so I could possibly be referred to oral surgery Monday or call my normal provider, but guess what the dentist had so much compassion and told me to wait that she would be able to my the wisdom tooth extraction for her last appointment today. I was in complete shock. God bless this practice they are truly angels
I’ve been to UMG Family Dentistry a few times now for cleaning, filling, and extractions. Safe to say I’ve covered most of the bases for the different types of care you can expect to receive when you visit. Lady Ung has been the one to take care of me during my visits and it’s always been a great experience.Let’s start with my semi annual routine cleaning. You can expect attention to detail where you do not feel as if you’re just being rushed out of there. No shaming here if you haven’t been as diligent in your oral hygiene, they’ll let you know what your situation looks like and what you should do in the future. No need to be concerned about visiting the dentist for the first time in a long time.On to my very unexpected filling. My crown broke very suddenly one day and after speaking with them, they were able to fit me into the schedule promptly with a time that worked for me. Scheduling is usually a hassle trying to find a time that works for you without having to move the rest of your life around, but I was able to go in on a Saturday morning and get that taken care of. The filling was a painless process, I was in and out pretty quickly. She took an xray to just get a better look at my situation which then led to another visit because of an infection that was found at the root of the tooth that needed the filling. Finally on to my extraction that needed to be done. Once again we were able to work out a date and time that best fit my schedule and I was seen at my scheduled time (isn’t it a pain when you have an appointment, but you aren’t seen until much later?). Extractions aren’t fun for anybody, but the entire process was very smooth. Local anesthesia hit all the right places so that I was good and numb to make the best of a bad situation. It was completed in a timely manner, got sutured up, and appointment to remove them scheduled for 2 weeks later.I know for a lot of people, going to the dentist hasn’t always been the best experience in the past. Oral health is something that gets neglected often for one reason or another, but please learn from me that preventative care is better than dealing with the aftermath. You’ll be treated with care and understanding here, if you’re looking for a new dentist, UMG Family Dentistry is there for you.
