At UMG Family Dentistry, we believe that a child’s oral health sets the foundation for their overall health and development. One important—but often overlooked—factor in proper mouth and facial growth is the presence of tongue-ties and lip-ties.
These conditions can affect everything from feeding and breathing to speech and jaw development. Thankfully, a simple procedure called a frenectomy can help set things right early on.
What Is a Tongue-Tie?
A tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) occurs when the small strip of tissue under the tongue (the lingual frenulum) is too short, thick, or tight. This restricts how the tongue moves, which is essential for:
- Breastfeeding or bottle feeding
- Swallowing and chewing
- Speech development
- Nasal breathing and oral posture
- Proper jaw and facial growth
A lip-tie can also cause similar issues when the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums is too tight.
Why Tongue and Lip Function Matter
The tongue plays a vital role in shaping the upper and lower jaw, supporting nasal breathing, and guiding overall mouth development.
When tongue movement is restricted, it may result in:
- A high, narrow palate (which affects breathing and tooth alignment)
- Improper swallowing patterns
- Speech delays or articulation issues
- Mouth breathing and disrupted sleep
- Snoring and/or sleep apnea
- Poor posture and facial development
Many of these issues can persist or worsen as children grow if not addressed early.
What Is a Frenectomy?
A frenectomy is a fast, gentle procedure that releases the tight tissue restricting tongue or lip movement.
At UMG Family Dentistry, we use state-of-the-art laser technology for this treatment, making it:
- Quick and minimally invasive
- Virtually painless
- Bloodless and suture-free
- Fast-healing with little downtime
In infants, results can often be seen immediately, with improvements in latch, feeding, and comfort. In older children, it can help with clearer speech, better breathing, and more stable facial development.
Together, we ensure your child receives the most complete and personalized care plan possible.
